Website for a cause: HCEC environmental campaigning and fundraising website
Hunter Community Environment Centre
Hunter Community Environment Centre needed a website that could help it reach and engage new audiences in its campaigning; and one that could help it raise funds and increase volunteer activity.
The community organisation relies on a small number of part-time employees and some active volunteers, so it doesn’t have loads of time to invest in complex administrative processes or website administration. Using the SquareSpace platform, MonkeyBrain built the environment centre an easy to use website that exceeded all of the organisation’s goals.
The website leveraged the Hunter region’s beautiful natural environment and wildlife for imagery that gave it authenticity and resonance with its target audience. An e-commerce function for collecting donations helps HCES raise vital funds for operation and a simple content management system means volunteers or staff can publish regular updates.

For a website that needs to engage people and move them to take action on important environmental issues, you want the images to capture attention. The images also had to be authentic and connected to the Hunter region. So for this website, we organised bespoke photography of local wildlife and geography and of the environment centre’s people and events. We also sourced images from amazing photographers who captured the region’s beauty.
Each webpage starts with one of these images as a banner to embed users in the time place and purpose of the environment centre. Large images of flora and fauna throughout the website are the key feature as backgrounds to critical tools like the contact form and campaign pages.
